Shark attacks have increased in the last couple of decades due to the increase in the number of people retreating to beaches for various activities such as swimming, surfing or even fishing. Every year there are around 70-100 shark attacks reported resulting in about 10-15 deaths. The figure is still incomplete as not all shark attacks are reported. And in fact many of the countries the reports of shark attacks are poor and main incidents go unreported. This happens due to the efforts that are sometimes made to keep attack quiet for fear of bad publicity.
So considering the above figures, you can very well agree that chances of getting into a car accident on the road are far more greater that being attacked by the shark. Looking back, we can find that the initial death rate was much higher than today, but with the development of readily available emergency services and improved medical treatment has greatly reduced the chances of deaths due to shark attacks. The number of attacks is certainly increasing due to the human interference in the shark hunting grounds, but there is no indication that there is any change in the per capita rate of attack.
