The frequency of shark accidents has certainly risen gradually over the years. It is estimated that worldwide nearly 70 to 100 shark accidents are registered annually in non-professional water activities of which an average 15 end fatally.
This appears to be a small number considering the annual 15 billion bathers swimmers and surfers who take to the oceans each year. Interestingly about a decade back such cases would go unreported. But the increasing media attention and shark enthusiasts network, keeps shark attack news in any part of the world as major headlines. When a surfer is bitten by a shark in Australia or Hawaii it is inevitably reported by the media. |
