More about the Great White Shark
More about the Great White Shark

The great white shark is the largest predatory fish in the world. Known as white death it can get the seaman’s adrenalin pumping at its mere sight. It can measure more than 6 meters in length and its weight could be more than 2000 kilograms. While breaching for a prey the mere sight of the huge form leaping out of the ocean and then turning, twisting and grabbing its morsel from its gaping wide jaws can leave you spellbound.

These sharks inhabit all major oceans and are known to be found around coastal surface waters. The habitat distribution of this apex predator is around Australia, off South Africa, California, Mexico as also in the Central Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. The densest populations are around Dyer Island in South Africa.

These sharks prefer prey with high contents of energy-rich fat and thrive on diet consisting of smaller sharks, fish, dolphins, sea lions, seals and even turtles. With their exceptional senses they forage usually in early mornings. Using ambush tactics they attack unsuspecting victims by taking advantage of low visibility during dawn. It kills different prey with different tactics depending on the form and mobility of the animal.

The great white shark is one of only a few sharks known to regularly lift its head above the sea surface to gaze at other objects such as prey. Great white sharks infrequently attack and sometimes even sink boats. They can attack boats up to 10 meters in length. They can bump or knock people overboard, usually 'attacking' the boat from the stern. Watch the predatory tactics of great white sharks on videos at www.sharkvideos.net
